Man Charged After Car Hits Two Pedestrians in Port Stephens

A 22-year-old man has been charged following a disturbing incident in Port Stephens last week. Last Friday, emergency services rushed to Somerset Drive, North Arm Cove, after receiving reports of two pedestrians struck by a car allegedly performing burnouts. The driver purportedly lost control, hitting a power pole and the individuals nearby before fleeing the scene, leaving the vehicle ablaze.

A 20-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl were treated at the scene before being transported to John Hunter Hospital in serious condition. The subsequent investigation, aided by the Crash Investigation Unit, led to the arrest of the suspect at Maitland Police Station early Monday morning.

The accused faces a litany of charges, including two counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct, reckless driving, failure to stop and assist after impact causing injury, and driving with a suspended license. Despite being granted strict conditional bail, he is slated to appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court on May 6, 2024.
