In a harrowing incident that unfolded on the evening of August 16, 2023, a 59-year-old man has been taken into custody and charged with a series of serious offenses including firearms-related charges and domestic violence. The incident, which took place in the Hunter Valley.
According to authorities, at approximately 7:30 pm on Wednesday, August 16, the man allegedly brandished a firearm and threatened a 56-year-old woman on a property located at Pyne Way in Mount View. Terrifyingly, he proceeded to discharge a shot during the confrontation. Despite the grave danger she faced, the woman managed to escape the scene and promptly alerted law enforcement.
Officers from the Hunter Valley Police District swiftly responded to the distress call, launching a thorough investigation into the incident. Their efforts were augmented by the deployment of PolAir, the police aerial unit, which aided in tracking down the suspect’s location. The intense pursuit culminated in the arrest of the man in the early hours of Thursday, August 17, 2023. The Tactical Operations Unit was instrumental in apprehending the suspect at an address on Short Street, Speers Point.
Following his arrest, the man was escorted to Belmont Police Station, where he was charged with a litany of offenses. These charges include armed intent to commit an indictable offense, discharging a firearm in a manner likely to cause injury to persons or property, possession of a loaded firearm with intent to endanger life not in public, common assault, and intimidation with the intention of instilling fear of physical harm.
In a subsequent development, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the Pyne Way residence, where the incident originally unfolded. The accused man’s bail hearing unfolded at Belmont Local Court on Thursday, August 17, where he was formally denied bail. His case is set to be presented before the Cessnock Local Court on September 12, 2023.
