
Newcastle Indoor Garden Enthusiast Arrested After “Sophisticated” Hydro Setup Discovered
A Newcastle man has been charged after police allegedly uncovered a large hydroponic cannabis operation during a search warrant in the city’s north.
About 3.15pm on Wednesday (22 April 2026), police attended a home on Morris Street in Birmingham Gardens as part of an ongoing investigation.
Inside the property, officers allegedly located a sophisticated hydroponic cannabis setup.
Police say they seized 331 cannabis plants along with around 23 kilograms of cannabis leaf during the search.
A 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Waratah Police Station.
He was charged with multiple offences, including cultivating a prohibited plant in a commercial quantity, supplying cannabis, and unlawfully diverting electricity.
He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court on 17 June 2026.
The investigation is continuing.
