A second woman has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a baby after a home birth near Newcastle in 2024.
A privately practising midwife attended a home in Wallsend on Wednesday, 2 October 2024, to assist a woman during labour.
Police will allege that over the following two days, the midwife failed to act on signs of serious complications and did not respond to requests from the mother to attend hospital.
On Friday, 4 October 2024, the woman was taken to John Hunter Hospital, where the baby was delivered via emergency caesarean section.
The baby boy died in hospital on Thursday, 10 October 2024.
Police established Strike Force Girona to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, with a 36-year-old woman previously charged who remains before the courts.
Following further inquiries, detectives arrested a 28-year-old woman at Newcastle Police Station about 7am today (Friday, 10 April 2026).
She has been charged with manslaughter and refused bail, and is due to appear before Bail Division Court 2 today.
