In a shocking incident that took place earlier this week, a man has been apprehended and is now in police custody after allegedly attempting to hijack a bus in Newcastle. The incident unfolded at approximately 7pm on Monday at a bus stop located on Ring Road within the premises of the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan Campus.
According to reports, the man, who was said to be in possession of a knife, made an audacious attempt to seize control of the bus. Swift action was taken as the authorities were alerted, prompting a prompt response from the police.
Responding officers successfully arrested the 34-year-old suspect and promptly transported him to Newcastle Police Station. However, it was discovered that he had sustained a hand injury during the altercation, leading to his subsequent transfer to John Hunter Hospital for medical treatment.
The suspect has since been charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault with intent to take/drive a motor vehicle while armed with a weapon, aggravated take/drive a motor vehicle with a person inside while armed with a weapon, armed with intent to commit an indictable offense, and hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty.
Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed during the alarming incident. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attempted bus hijacking as they work to ensure the safety and security of the community.
