Controversy sparks over plans to build an offshore windfarm in Newcastle and Port Stephens, as a petition opposing the project gains momentum.
The petition, which has garnered 423 signatures, opposes the proposal by Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen to construct at least 130 wind turbines off the pristine coastline of Port Stephens, with the potential for more in the future. The turbines, which could reach a height of 260m and be visible from shore, are expected to have a detrimental impact on tourism, fishing, shipping, and marine life.
The community is requesting greater engagement and information regarding the proposal, as the consultation provided was deemed insufficient, with unanswered questions.
The petition calls on the House to halt the windfarm proposal and, if the community rejects the project, to abandon the initiative altogether. The petition will remain open for signatures until May 10th, 2023, at 11:59 PM (AEST), giving the public 13 more days to make their voices heard.
