Teenager in Custody After Alleged Church Stabbing in Sydney

News Update:

In an overnight incident at a church in Sydney’s south-west, a teenager remains in police custody following an alleged stabbing. The event unfolded at approximately 7:10 pm on Monday (15 April 2024) on Welcome Street, Wakeley, prompting a swift response from authorities.

Upon arrival, officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command discovered a 53-year-old man with head lacerations and a 39-year-old man who sustained injuries while attempting to intervene, including lacerations and a shoulder wound. Both victims received medical attention from NSW Ambulance paramedics and were transported to Liverpool Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The situation escalated as a 15-year-old boy, restrained by members of the public, was apprehended by police. Outside the church, a sizable crowd gathered, prompting additional law enforcement from across the Metropolitan Region, including specialized units.

During a public order disturbance, projectiles were hurled at officers, resulting in injuries, damage to police vehicles, and theft of property. The 15-year-old suspect was subsequently removed from the scene and hospitalized under police guard, having undergone surgery for injuries sustained during the alleged attack.

In response to the incident, officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command have initiated Strike Force Petrina to probe the stabbing and Strike Force Dribs to investigate the public disorder, with the aim of identifying those involved.

As inquiries persist, authorities urge any witnesses or individuals possessing relevant information or mobile phone footage to come forward and assist the investigation. They can contact the police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
