Teens Charged in Wallsend Carjacking Incident

Wallsend, Wednesday, 08 May 2024

Three teenagers have been formally charged in connection with an alleged carjacking incident that took place in Wallsend, located in the state’s Hunter Region.

According to reports, the incident unfolded around 3:20 am on Saturday, May 4, 2024, when officers from the Newcastle Police District attempted to stop a Suzuki Vitara on Newcastle Road. The vehicle allegedly failed to comply with the officers’ instructions, prompting a pursuit.

Following the deployment of road spikes, the Suzuki came to a halt on Longworth Avenue in Wallsend, at which point three individuals, identified as boys aged 13, 14, and 15, fled from the vehicle. They were subsequently apprehended and taken into custody before being released to be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.

Further investigations revealed that the Suzuki had been stolen from a shopping center carpark on Tyrell Street, Wallsend, after the driver, a 51-year-old woman, was reportedly threatened with a knife.

Yesterday, May 7, 2024, the 15 and 14-year-old suspects were re-arrested and charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon and robbery in company. They have been granted conditional bail and are scheduled to appear at a children’s court on Monday, June 3, 2024.

Today, May 8, 2024, the 13-year-old boy was also re-arrested at Waratah Police Station and similarly charged. He has been granted conditional bail and is set to appear at a children’s court on Monday, May 27, 2024.
