A major investigation is underway after two people were killed in a devastating multi-vehicle crash at Kooragang near Newcastle on Tuesday morning.
Emergency services were called to Cormorant Road, Kooragang, about 9.25am (Tuesday 17 February 2026) after reports of a serious collision in the northbound lanes.
Police were told a Subaru sedan and a van collided, leaving the occupants of the Subaru critically injured. Despite urgent efforts by NSW Ambulance paramedics, both occupants died at the scene.
The victims have not yet been formally identified but are believed to be a man and woman in their 70s.
The van’s driver, an 88-year-old man, was treated for minor injuries and taken to John Hunter Hospital for assessment and mandatory testing.
🚨 Hit-and-Run Allegation
Investigators later alleged the Subaru had been involved in an earlier crash moments before with a Holden Commodore, which is believed to have left the scene.
A 42-year-old man attended Waratah Police Station about 9.45am, where he was arrested and taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing. He was later released pending further inquiries.

The crash is being investigated by Newcastle City Police, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit.
