Construction has begun on a $200 million, 300-home over-55s community in Cessnock, transforming the former Stonebridge Golf Course into a major lifestyle destination.
The Hermitage, developed by Principle Living, will be the largest community of its type in the area and marks the company’s first land lease project in Cessnock, following success at Blueheath at the Bower in Port Stephens.

Spanning 37 hectares, the development will retain and refurbish the existing clubhouse and feature resort-style facilities, including a private clubhouse, indoor pool, wellness gym, lawn bowls and pickleball courts, pocket parks, and dedicated caravan parking. Homes will range from two- to three-bedroom designs across three landscaped precincts, with some offering golf course views.
The Hermitage operates under a land lease model, where residents own their homes but lease the land, providing benefits such as avoiding stamp duty and potential rent assistance.
Civil works are underway, with NSW construction firm Daracon appointed to deliver the project. The first homes are expected to be ready for residents by early 2027.
Principle Living Director John Stevens said the project would “breathe new life into a well-known local site while creating much-needed housing choice for downsizers and retirees.” Executive Director Andrew Mann added that the community offers a way for residents to simplify their lifestyle without compromising on quality.
Set near the gateway to Australia’s wine region, The Hermitage aims to combine convenience, green space, and connection for those entering a more relaxed stage of life.
