🚨 BREAKING: Charges Laid Months After Horror Hunter Crash — Critical Driving Moment Now Under the Microscope
A man has been hit with a string of serious charges following a devastating two-vehicle crash that claimed a life in the Hunter region earlier this year — with investigators zeroing in on a critical moment that may have changed everything.
Emergency services rushed to Nelson Bay Road at Salamander Bay about 7.25pm on Saturday, January 17, 2026, after reports of a violent collision between two vehicles.
A 77-year-old woman, who was driving a Toyota Rav4, tragically died at the scene.
Three passengers in her vehicle — two men aged 78 and 79, along with a 76-year-old woman — were treated by paramedics before being transported to hospital in stable conditions.
The occupants of the second vehicle, a Subaru Forester — a 66-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman — were also taken to hospital following treatment at the scene.
Police from Port Hunter Stephens established a crime scene, with specialist crash investigators working for months to piece together exactly what led to the fatal impact.
At the centre of that investigation — and now under intense scrutiny — is the Subaru driver’s alleged failure to keep left of the dividing line, a split-second driving decision police allege may have directly contributed to the deadly crash.
After extensive inquiries, the 66-year-old man was arrested today at Nelson Bay Police Station.
He has now been charged with 13 offences, including dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, multiple counts of causing grievous bodily harm, and misconduct behind the wheel.
The man was granted conditional bail and will appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday, June 1, 2026.
His driver’s licence has also been suspended as the case heads to court.
