Miner Identified in Hunter Valley Tragedy
Emergency services were called to Dry Creek Road, Ellalong, around 12:45 PM on Tuesday, 17 September, following reports of the incident. Despite ongoing recovery efforts by the Hunter Valley Police District, supported by various emergency agencies, Hugo’s life could not be saved.
The miner who tragically fell 400 meters down a decommissioned mine shaft in the Hunter Valley has been identified as 59-year-old Craig Hugo.
Beyond Bathrooms & Building, a company connected to Hugo, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media:
“On the 17th of September 2024, our lives changed forever. We lost our dad, our best friend, and the bloke we looked up to the most. Words can’t describe the pain and hurt we feel right now. Dad, we love you always and forever.”
The NSW Resources Regulator has launched an investigation into the incident, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
