Cessnock City Council is shaking up waste management in the region with a game-changing expansion at the Cessnock Waste Management Centre.
The first stage of a massive landfill extension project is already underway, ensuring that the city can handle its growing waste disposal needs for decades to come. The new landfill cell will add an extra 20 years of space, making sure Cessnock’s waste needs are taken care of well into the future.

But that’s not all. The upgrade includes a new leachate pond, a sediment pond, and a new access road—turning a once-polluted mining and quarry site into a productive, environmentally responsible asset. Talk about a glow-up!
Mayor Dan Watton is all in on the project, saying it’s not just about trash—it’s about sustainability. “This project will ensure the Cessnock Waste Management Centre continues to serve the community in an environmentally responsible way,” he said. “We’re not just managing waste; we’re creating jobs and transforming a neglected site into something of real value.”
The project, set to be completed by November 2025, has been handed over to Daracon, a contractor with a solid reputation in handling large-scale infrastructure projects.
