In an extraordinary two-month stretch, the Hunter region has endured over 45 earthquakes, centering around Muswellbrook. These seismic events have shaken local communities, leading to more than 500 insurance claims from residents facing property damage and structural concerns. However, many claims remain unresolved, with some being outright denied, prompting growing concerns about the insurance claims process in the wake of such intense natural activity.
Federal Member for Hunter, Dan Repacholli, recently met with the Insurance Council of Australia to address mounting complaints and clarify the claims process for those impacted. Repacholli emphasized that his office has been hearing from numerous constituents experiencing challenges with their insurance claims since the earthquake swarm began. While residents seek clarity, a wave of misinformation has added to the confusion.
Repacholli addressed these concerns in a recent Facebook post, countering what he described as “incorrect information” circulating among residents. He highlighted a misconception that if the government declared the area a natural disaster zone, all claims would be fast-tracked or automatically approved. “This is false,” he clarified, stressing that while a disaster declaration can trigger special assistance, it does not guarantee blanket coverage or immediate claim approval.
Without a formal disaster declaration from the government, insurance companies are processing claims individually. Many residents are facing frustration with denied claims or delays, with some feeling that the scale and persistence of the earthquakes warrant stronger support measures. In Repacholli’s meeting with the Insurance Council of Australia, he raised these concerns and discussed how insurers could improve the process for affected homeowners.
Repacholli encouraged residents experiencing issues with their claims to contact his office directly for guidance. “If you have had any issues with your claims for earthquake damage, please let my office know, and we will follow up and give you some accurate information,” he urged in his post. His team aims to cut through the confusion by offering residents direct support and up-to-date information on their options.
