$38k weekly art funding, fortnightly bin pick up hurting Loretta’s Labor in Maitland.

Maitland mayor Loretta Baker (Labor) is struggling to hold on after one term, after some very unpopular decisions, including collecting general waste bins fortnightly.

In additional to her controversial vote to allocate $38,000 per week to cover art gallery shortfall, she also failed to deliver her promises cuts to rates, instead voting for 4 consecutive increases.

Labor’s votes to oppose independent Cr Philip Penfold proposal for a free bulk waste collection was another bold choice, seemingly flying in the face of community wishes.

When approached for comment, Cr Penfold, who is running a team of independent candidates in all wards, said “This election will be close. The interest at pre poll is strong though we’re fighting got every vote. Voters are keen for change.”

“We need to return council to basics, and ensure roads and infrastructure are the priority.”
