Bathurst Street Bridge Upgrade Confirmed After $700,000 Funding Boost

April 17 8:02 AM • MHV NEWS

A major infrastructure upgrade is on the way for residents of Abermain and Sawyers Gully, with the ageing Bathurst Street Bridge set to be replaced following a $700,000 funding injection.

The current structure—a narrow single-lane timber bridge with existing weight restrictions—has long been a source of frustration for locals, creating traffic bottlenecks and safety concerns as vehicles are forced to take turns crossing the narrow span.

The upgrade will deliver a modern dual-lane concrete bridge designed to significantly improve traffic flow and safety. The new structure will be approximately 8.5 metres wide and 12 metres long, built to current engineering standards and removing existing load limitations.

According to the original statement from Federal Member for Hunter Dan Repacholi, the funding has been secured in partnership with local infrastructure priorities and advocacy at the federal level.

The investment was also linked to ongoing infrastructure commitments involving Federal Member for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain MP, alongside delivery planning through Cessnock City Council.

Once completed, the upgrade is expected to eliminate the long-standing issues of congestion, awkward single-lane crossings, and load restrictions that have impacted local residents and service vehicles.

Further announcements regarding construction timelines are expected as the project progresses, with additional infrastructure updates anticipated across the Hunter region.
