Cessnock has paid tribute to veterans who served in Middle East operations during a commemorative event at the Veterans Park Memorial in Aberdare.
The Middle East Area Operations Commemorations Day was held on Sunday, attracting community members, veterans, and local leaders to one of the most significant Cessnock events of the month. The ceremony honoured service and sacrifice in this important theatre of operations.
Mayor of Cessnock Daniel Watton attended the memorial, describing it as a privilege to take part.
“It was an honour to attend the Middle East Area Operations Commemorations Day today at Veterans Park Memorial, Aberdare – celebrating and remembering our local heroes who have served in this important theatre of operations,” Mr Watton said.
The event was organised by the Cessnock Sub-Branch RSL, with support from associate sub-branches. The RSL services brought together current and former members of the Australian Defence Force, along with families and residents wishing to pay their respects.
Mayor Watton praised the organisers, calling it a “fantastic effort” by the Cessnock Sub-Branch RSL and associated groups to make the day special.
The commemorations are part of an ongoing effort to recognise the contributions of Australian service personnel, particularly those deployed to the Middle East. For many attendees, it was both a solemn moment of remembrance and an important community gathering.
The service concluded with the traditional words, “Lest We Forget,” reaffirming the community’s commitment to honouring those who served.
The Veterans Park Memorial remains a key site for reflection in the Cessnock region, with regular RSL services held throughout the year as part of the city’s dedication to remembering its history and supporting its veterans.
