An 18-year-old woman from Canberra has been refused bail following an incident of unauthorized protest in Newcastle last night. Emergency services responded to reports of the woman scaling a coal loader and attaching herself to a railing on Cormorant Road around 8:30 p.m.
Newcastle City Police District officers, supported by Police Rescue, swiftly arrived at the scene and safely removed the woman from the structure. Approximately an hour later, she was apprehended and subsequently taken to Waratah Police Station.
The woman has been charged with offenses including entering or remaining on a major facility with the intent to cause damage and entering enclosed non-agricultural lands, posing a serious safety risk. As a result of the charges, she was denied bail and is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court today, June 21, 2023.
Ongoing investigations are being conducted into the incident.
