An elderly lady presented to Cessnock Hospital this afternoon requiring an urgent ring removal after her finger became swallon and could not remove the ring herself.
Hospital staff were unable to remove the ring and called in the Cessnock Rescue Squad who have specific tools for ring removals.
“we tried the manual ring cutter but straight away realised it was too tough for it.
Our battery operated dremel was used to make a cut in the ring, and due to sensitivity of the injuries, we decided not to attempt to spread the ring to remove it.
We opted to make a second cut, we asked the lady at her own pace to see if she could rotate the ring 180° so we could perform the second cut, which she did, this way she had control and could manage the movement and pain.Once she finished the rotation, the second cut was performed and the ring fell off.

She was very brave throughout the process and a sense of relief came over when it was removed.”
