Cessnock, NSW – Kylie and Corey Solomon, whose home was destroyed in the Abermain fire, expressed anger and frustration on Facebook after the Cessnock Advertiser published a story and photo featuring a man falsely claiming ownership of their property.

The man, pictured standing in front of the fire-damaged home, was identified as a homer owner by the Advertiser, but it’s alleged the man pictured who lives nearby was looting the house for metal from the property to sell.
Kylie’s post highlighted the emotional distress caused by the stranger intruding into their personal tragedy and the misinformation surrounding their loss. “It is not enough that we lost our home but to see strangers violating our personal space for their own benefit breaks our hearts further,” she wrote.
The incident raises questions about the Advertiser’s fact-checking procedures in news reports, especially during sensitive times.
The Solomons are calling for accountability from the Advertiser and urging them to review their journalistic practices.
