News Update: Five Teens Charged After Police Pursuit in Newcastle
In a recent incident, five teenagers have been charged following a police pursuit through Newcastle, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, October 7, 2023.
Around 3:30 am, officers from the Newcastle City Police District were on patrol in the Mayfield area when they attempted to stop a Toyota SUV on Maitland Road due to the driver’s reckless behavior.
The Toyota, allegedly driven by a 16-year-old, failed to comply with the police order, resulting in a pursuit through local streets. The chase ultimately led to Wilsons Road in Windale, where the vehicle collided with a kerb, causing a tire to deflate.
The damaged Toyota came to a stop in Mayfield West, where the driver and four passengers, aged between 13 and 17, attempted to flee on foot. However, all five teenagers were apprehended at the scene and subsequently taken into custody, with their detention occurring at Newcastle and Waratah Police Stations.
The 16-year-old driver faces multiple charges, including aggravated break and enter to commit a serious indictable offense, unauthorized use of a vehicle, reckless driving during a police pursuit, and possession of suspected stolen property.
A 17-year-old male passenger has been charged with unlawfully being in the stolen vehicle and attempting to disguise his face with intent to commit an indictable offense.
Two male passengers, aged 13 and 17, along with a 16-year-old girl, were also charged with being unlawfully in the stolen vehicle.
According to police reports, the Toyota had been stolen following a break-in at a residence in Eleebana prior to the pursuit.
All five teenagers have been granted strict conditional bail and are scheduled to appear before the children’s court. The girl is set to appear on Monday, October 16, 2023, while the four boys will face court on Monday, October 30, 2023.
