The Hunter Valley community is reeling after the theft of a 185-year-old church bell from the deconsecrated St Ann’s Presbyterian Church in Paterson. The bell, which holds significant historical value, was removed using an angle grinder between Thursday and Sunday afternoon, according to police reports.
Chief Inspector Rob Post expressed concern that the bell may be melted down for its metal value. Property owner Louise Shirvington described the theft as “devastating,” noting that the bell was likely dragged down a hill and loaded into a vehicle.
The bell is particularly significant to the community, having been rung so vigorously on Armistice Day in 1918 that it cracked—a testament to the jubilation marking the end of World War I. Paterson Historical Society president Cameron Archer emphasized its importance, stating, “It’s more than just any old bell and it’s been there for over 180 years.”
Police are seeking dashcam and CCTV footage from the area and urge anyone with information to come forward. Ms. Shirvington remains hopeful for the bell’s return, appealing to the public’s conscience.
