Peter Dutton Announces Plan to Halve Fuel Excise for 12 Months
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has unveiled a major cost-of-living policy, promising to halve the fuel excise for one year if elected. The plan would slash the tax on petrol and diesel from 50.8 cents to 25.4 cents per litre, delivering significant savings to Australian households and businesses.
Dutton estimates that:
✅ Households with one car could save $700–$750 per year
✅ Families with two vehicles could see savings of up to $1,500 annually
The initiative, expected to cost $6 billion, is designed to provide immediate relief to struggling Australians, particularly families, small businesses, and transport workers.
“This policy delivers real, meaningful relief to Australians, unlike Labor’s tax cuts, which amount to just a few dollars a week,” Dutton said.
Critics warn the policy could increase inflation and impact the Reserve Bank’s interest rate decisions. However, Dutton insists that cost-of-living relief is the priority.
