A dramatic police chase through Newcastle has ended in the arrest of a 45-year-old man this afternoon.
The pursuit began around 12:35 PM in Hamilton when officers attempted to stop a Kia Rio hatchback. The driver allegedly refused to pull over, leading police on a high-speed chase through Mayfield, where the vehicle clipped a truck’s side mirror.
The chase continued to Newcastle West, where another vehicle was side-swiped, forcing police to terminate the pursuit. However, the driver later crashed into a car on Stuart Avenue, Hamilton East, before abandoning the vehicle and attempting to flee on foot.
Officers pursued the man through a residential area, eventually arresting him on Corona Street. He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and is assisting with inquiries.
Fortunately, the drivers of the other vehicles involved were not injured.
