A dramatic rescue unfolded in the Hunter Valley on Friday, 8 August, when a man in his 70s was seriously injured in a quad bike accident on a remote rural property near Dungog.
Emergency services were alerted just after 2:00pm, with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter urgently tasked by NSW Ambulance to the scene. Due to the isolated location and steep hillside terrain, the helicopter’s critical care medical team was winched down to reach the man, who had sustained multiple serious injuries.
After being stabilised on-site, the patient was carefully placed in a winch stretcher and lifted into the aircraft before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle for urgent medical treatment.
Quad bike accidents remain a leading cause of serious farm injuries in Australia, prompting calls for increased safety awareness, protective gear use, and regular equipment maintenance. Experts warn that personal injury claims and medical costs from such accidents can be significant, with many victims facing long-term rehabilitation.
The incident also highlights the importance of emergency helicopter services in regional areas, where rural property accidents can occur far from immediate medical help.
