Local Artist and Author Nathan Bell Thrives with Street Art Shop on Beaumont Street
Hamilton, Newcastle – Local artist and author Nathan Bell has become a beloved fixture on Beaumont Street with his unique street art shop. For the past four years, Bell has been selling his artwork and books outside the Mediterranean grocer, with the support of its owner, Sam.
Bell’s setup is inspired by old-school trading practices. “It’s like the travelling salesmen of the olden days,” Bell explained in a recent podcast. “I just turn up on the street, set up my art and posters, and start selling.” His operation is portable, allowing him to pop up at various locations, a nod to the free market spirit.
His inspirations include a Brazilian jewelry maker and local artist Alison Jolly, both known for their street trading in Hamilton and beyond. Bell’s goal is to encourage more artists to join him, creating a vibrant street market culture in Newcastle.
In addition to his artwork, Bell sells his novel, “Kings of the New Age: The Quest of the Balancing Stones,” paintings of aliens, and a variety of works by other local authors. He takes pride in his rapport with the community, boasting around 50 to 70 regular customers. His latest release, a short story titled “Saturday Night on Beaumont Street,” has already sold 30 copies in just a few weeks.
Despite facing occasional criticism and challenges, Bell remains dedicated to his street shop. “It’s not about the money; it’s about getting art out there and putting art and culture into the community,” he said. Bell’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for local art have made him a well-known figure in Hamilton, inspiring other artists to consider street trading as a viable platform for their work.
