The NRL season has successfully been rebooted and is still yet to allocate venues for at least 88 matches for the season. Maitland Councillor Mitchell Griffin has floated the idea that Maitland could host a match later in the year when crowds are expected to return to stadiums across the country.
Many locals would be been keen to see a match without having to travel to Newcastle and would be a great way to put the spot light on Maitland after Covid-19 and help stimulate the local economy.
But there’s just one problem, Mayor Lorretta Baker refused to even debate the matter at the local council meeting last night. With a hard no from Mayor Lorretta Baker it seems like the dream is over for local footy fans unless the people of Maitland can convince Mayor Lorretta that hosting an NRL is game would be great opportunity for Maitland.
Councillor Mitchell Griffin said “We were going to propose the Number 1 Sportsground which was redeveloped 2 years ago. Even with crowd restrictions it would have delivered fantastic national wide exposure for Maitland to reboot our visitor economy after COVID”
