Two men have been charged following an incident this morning that resulted in a police officer being injured in Toronto, in the state’s north.
Around 3:20 AM, officers from the Lake Macquarie Police District responded to a reported domestic incident on Awaba Road. Upon arrival, the two men became hostile, barricading themselves inside the home. Police forced entry through the rear door, where they arrested the men, one of whom was armed with knuckle dusters and a ring knife.
During the arrest, one officer sustained lacerations to his leg, hand, and torso and was transported to the hospital for treatment. Other officers on the scene sustained minor injuries.
The men were taken to Toronto Police Station. The 35-year-old man faces eight charges, including:
- Intimidating a police officer,
- Wounding a person with intent to resist arrest,
- Causing grievous bodily harm to a police officer,
- Using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention,
- Being armed with intent to commit an indictable offense,
- Possessing or using a prohibited weapon without a permit,
- Hindering or resisting a police officer, and
- Assault occasioning actual bodily harm (domestic violence).
The 28-year-old man was charged with five offenses, including:
- Two counts of intimidating a police officer,
- Hindering or resisting a police officer, and
- Destroying or damaging property (domestic violence).
Both men have been refused bail and are scheduled to appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow, Sunday, 7 July 2024.
