Opinion: NSW State Government Loses Control of Hunter Rail Corridor Amidst Protester Chaos
The NSW State Government has lost control of the Hunter Rail Corridor, with yet another teen arrested today for obstructing the rail line. For more than three weeks, protesters have been disrupting the corridor, risking their lives recklessly in the name of climate activism.
The State Government and NSW Police have failed the Hunter with their reactive approach to rounding up these protesters, even resorting to shutting down the rail corridor at night. This strategy is ineffective and unacceptable. NSW Police need more powers to proactively take down and disrupt Blockade Australia. This group must be stopped before they can interrupt train services further.
Surely, NSW Police know who these protesters are. If not, they need to infiltrate the group and apprehend them before they can cause more disruptions. The people of the Hunter have had enough.
I recall the extensive measures police took to stop COVID protests back in 2020. We know what the police are capable of, and we must ask why more isn’t being done to halt this destructive behavior.
