Port Stephens Councillor Mark Watson has called out State Member for Port Stephens, Hon. Kate Washington MP, for allegedly making outright false claims during a radio interview with 2HD’s Richard King on 11 November.
During the interview, Minister Washington claimed that Cr Watson supported a ban on all powered vessels, including jet skis, in Port Stephens. She stated:
“Indeed, and that was actually what was in the motion moved by council, supported by Mark Watson, at the time, that NSW government should look at what we can do in terms of all powered watercraft and jet skis.”
Cr Watson has strongly rejected this assertion, saying the claim “completely misrepresents the council motion and my position.” He clarified that the motion, passed by Port Stephens Council on 11 February 2025, specifically requested a review of jet ski safety and restrictions, focusing on swimmer safety, not a ban on all powered vessels.
“Powered vessels cover a wide range of boats used for fishing, recreation, and tourism,” Cr Watson explained. “The motion was about reviewing jet ski activity in high-traffic areas, not restricting all boats. Minister Washington’s comments are false and misleading.”
Cr Watson is now demanding that Ms Washington issue a public apology and correct the record, saying: “The people of Port Stephens deserve honesty from their elected representatives. Decisions about our waterways should be based on truth, consultation, and common sense—not political spin.”
This dispute highlights ongoing tension in NSW local politics over waterway regulations, jet ski safety, and the accuracy of public statements by elected officials.
