Alleged Carjacking Leads to Arrests in Maitland
Maitland, September 27, 2023 – In a recent development, two men have been charged in connection with an alleged carjacking incident that took place earlier this month. The incident unfolded on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, around 12:45 pm, at an aquatic center located on Les Darcy Drive in Maitland.
Police were summoned to the scene following reports of a carjacking in progress. According to witnesses, two men had approached two women, both in their 60s, before allegedly fleeing the scene in a vehicle belonging to the women.
Law enforcement officers from the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District swiftly responded to the call and initiated an investigation into the matter. A crime scene was established, and authorities began piecing together the events leading up to the carjacking.
Police allege that the stolen vehicle was discovered later that same evening, destroyed by fire near Singleton. This discovery prompted an intensified effort to identify and apprehend those responsible.
On Wednesday, September 13, 2023, a 25-year-old man from Raymond Terrace was arrested at a residence on Barton Avenue, Singleton. Subsequently, he was charged with several offenses, including aggravated steal from the person, steal from the person with a value exceeding $15,000, damage to property by fire or explosives, and using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention. The individual was denied bail and was scheduled to appear before Singleton Local Court on Thursday, September 14, 2023. His bail was subsequently refused, and he is expected to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
Following extensive investigative efforts, a 47-year-old man from Rutherford was arrested at Maitland Police Station on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at approximately 3 pm. He faces two charges of stealing from the person with a value exceeding $15,000. Bail was also denied for this individual, and he is set to appear before Maitland Local Court on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.
