A routine taxi fare allegedly turned violent in Newcastle this morning, with a woman now facing court after a shocking incident in the city’s inner suburbs.
Emergency services were called to Denison Street, Hamilton, just after 9.20am on Monday following reports a taxi driver had been assaulted by a passenger.
Police were told the driver was allegedly attacked inside the cab. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man at the scene for minor injuries to his hands.
During a rapid response, officers seized a knife and a mobile phone from the location, sparking urgent inquiries and patrols by Newcastle City Police District.
Less than half an hour later, at about 9.45am, police arrested a 39-year-old woman on nearby Cleary Street.
She was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and custody of a knife in a public place (first offence).
The woman was granted strict conditional bail and is due to face Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, 26 February 2026.
