About 8.30pm (Friday 3 April 2020), officers from Hunter Valley Police District stopped a Ford Laser sedan on Heddon Street, Kurri Kurri, and spoke with the driver, a 38-year-old man.
After speaking with the man police felt there was reasonable grounds to search the mans vehicle as they believed a crime had been committed. The man was resisting and became aggressive towards officers. Police then attempted to arrest the man who then punched a senior constable in the head.
Police than deployed OC spray on than the man. The man then fled, after a short pursuit on foot police attempt to arrest the man again. Police will allege in the second attempt the man punched a female officer in the head.
He was taken to Cessnock Police Station, where he was charged with
- two counts of resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty
- three counts of assault police officer in execution of duty.
The Waratah man has been refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Saturday 4 April 2020).
