August 30, 2024 – Bororen, QLD: A tragic two-vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway near Daisy Dell Road early this morning has claimed the life of one man and resulted in extensive damage to the roadway.
At approximately 5:10 am, a utility vehicle collided with a truck transporting ammonium nitrate. The driver of the utility was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver, a 47-year-old man from New South Wales, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the hospital for treatment.
The impact of the collision caused hazardous materials to spill from the truck, which then caught fire. A 2.5-kilometer exclusion zone was established around the site, and approximately 50 people were evacuated to the nearby Bororen township as a safety precaution.
Around 9:30 am, the truck exploded, causing significant damage to the Bruce Highway. The highway will remain closed between Daisy Dell Road and Turkey Beach Road for an extended period, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.
The exclusion zone was lifted at 5:20 pm, allowing evacuated residents to return home. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
