In a high-intensity operation, the Lake Macquarie Proactive Crime Team apprehended two individuals after a daring car-jacking attempt on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
At approximately 3:20 pm, law enforcement officers were on routine patrol along Carona Street in Windale when they spotted a 22-year-old man riding an unregistered yellow Suzuki dirt bike. Pursuing the suspect, the same dirt bike was later seen at a residence on Lachlan Street in Windale.
Upon locating the rider at the house, the individual fled from the authorities as they attempted to make an arrest. A dramatic foot chase ensued, leading to the Pacific Highway in Bennetts Green, where the suspect reportedly tried to carjack a passing black Honda sedan before being successfully apprehended by the police.
Following this dramatic incident, a thorough search of the residence was conducted under Operation Utah Police, revealing not only a firearm but also a quantity of methylamphetamine. The dirt bike was subsequently seized by the authorities.
The 22-year-old suspect now faces a slew of charges, including using an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle on the road, driving without a valid license, possession of a prohibited drug, hindering or resisting a police officer in the line of duty, and escaping police custody. He has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear before Belmont Local Court on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.
In an unrelated development, a 20-year-old individual found inside the house was arrested due to an outstanding arrest warrant.
However, authorities are seeking the cooperation of the driver of the Honda sedan, who managed to drive away before their details could be obtained by the police. Additionally, anyone possessing dashcam footage of the incident is urged to reach out to Belmont Police and reference event number E78631847.
