Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga is reportedly considering a dramatic switch of codes at the end of the 2025 NRL season, with sources telling NBN News that the star fullback is in discussions with a Rugby Union agent.
Ponga, who is contracted with the Knights until the end of 2027, is said to be exploring opportunities outside rugby league amid growing frustration over the club’s form and direction. The Knights have struggled this season, and speculation is mounting that Ponga may seek a release from his multi-million-dollar deal if a suitable opportunity arises.
While there has been no official comment from Ponga or the club, Rugby Union officials have publicly expressed interest in recruiting him in recent months. Former All Black Stephen Donald recently suggested Union is still “very much on the table” for Ponga, and All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has also indicated he’d be open to a conversation.
Ponga previously excelled in multiple sports, including rugby union during his school years, and has long been viewed as a cross-code talent. If the switch goes ahead, he could be a candidate for Super Rugby or even international selection, thanks to his New Zealand heritage.
The Newcastle Knights have yet to respond to the latest reports.
