The lights are still on—for now.
But come 2025, under Labor’s national smart meter rollout, the government’s plan for “when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing” is simple: they’ll remotely throttle your power. That’s right—your air con, your heater, your hot water system, your life—all under their control.
They’re calling it “smart,” but make no mistake—this is not about making your life easier. It’s about making you easier to control.
Every home and small business in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT is being dragged into this mandatory surveillance energy system. You won’t get a choice. You won’t be asked. And once your smart meter is in, the game changes.
Suddenly, you’re on a time-of-use tariff. Power’s cheap at 2 a.m. but punishing at 6 p.m.—you know, when families actually need it. Turn the heater on in winter? Better check your app first. Use the dryer during a cold snap? You just triggered “peak demand penalties.” And if the grid is struggling—which it will—don’t worry: the energy provider has the power to shut you off remotely.
This isn’t speculation. It’s already happening around the world.
In California, smart meters were used to lock people’s thermostats during heatwaves. In Spain, energy companies use them to cap usage. In Germany, new laws allow utilities to throttle EV chargers and heat pumps remotely to “stabilize the grid.”
In Victoria, where smart meters have been in place for over a decade, disconnections without warning are now routine. No knock on the door. Just off. That’s your future.
And when the rolling blackouts start, you won’t be able to call anyone. Because this was the plan all along. Labor’s renewables obsession has gutted coal, stalled gas, banned nuclear, and tied the future of the energy grid to weather apps.
When it all falls apart, they won’t admit failure. They’ll blame you. For using too much power. For expecting too much. For not sacrificing enough in the name of “climate justice.”
So instead of building more reliable energy, Labor is building a system to ration what little power we have left.
They’ll call it “flexibility.” They’ll say it’s “saving the planet.” But when your home goes dark in the middle of winter, when your appliances stop working without warning, when you realize the government now has the ability to flick a switch and shut down your life—you’ll understand the truth.
This isn’t about energy. This is about control.
The smart meter isn’t there to help you. It’s there to help them. It’s a digital leash—and they just slipped it around your neck.
