A male teacher has been accused of committing common assault at Maitland Grossmann High in East Maitland, resulting in his arrest. According to reports, Port Stephens-Hunter Police District officials were called to the high school on Cumberland Street at around 2pm yesterday in response to allegations that a student had been assaulted by the teacher.
Although the NSW Ambulance service evaluated the teenage boy on-site, he did not appear to have suffered any physical harm. Late yesterday, several students shared footage of the supposed altercation in a classroom from their mobile phones.
The 62-year-old man was arrested at approximately 9:30 pm and transported to the Belmont Police Station, where he was charged with common assault. He was granted conditional bail and is expected to appear before the Maitland Local Court in April.
