Man charged with eight offences after public place shooting on Mid North Coast

Police have arrested and charged a 34-year-old man with eight offences following a public place shooting on the Mid North Coast.

According to police reports, the incident occurred at around 6am on Monday 13 March 2023, when officers were called to a home on Maloney Street, Bowraville, after reports of gunfire.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found damage to the exterior of the property and subsequently established Strike Force Leisler to investigate the incident. Following a thorough investigation, the police arrested the 34-year-old suspect at a rest stop on the M1 Motorway in Nambucca Heads at around 7:40 pm on Tuesday 15 March 2023.

The man was then taken to Macksville Police Station where he was charged with eight offences, including firing a firearm at a dwelling-house with disregard for safety, possessing an unauthorised firearm, possessing a loaded firearm in a public place, possessing ammunition without holding a licence/permit/authority, stalking/intimidating with the intention of causing fear of physical harm, possessing a prohibited drug, and possessing a prescribed restricted substance.

The accused was refused bail and was set to appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court on Wednesday 15 March 2023. The police have not released any information on the motive for the shooting or the relationship between the suspect and the homeowner. However, they have urged anyone with information to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
