Mayor Watton challenges Maitland’s Mayor to grand final wager
Cessnock Mayor Daniel Watton has thrown down a playful challenge to Maitland Mayor Philip Penfold ahead of this weekend’s Newcastle Rugby League grand final.
With the Cessnock Goannas men’s side set to face off against the Maitland Pickers, Mayor Watton proposed a high-stakes wager between the rival councils.
“Let’s go double or nothing,” Mayor Watton wrote. “The losing mayor flies the winner’s flag for 24 hours, plus takes part in a photoshoot wearing the winning team’s merch.”
He also reminded Maitland that Cessnock’s women’s squad have already secured their premiership title — and the men are now looking to join them.
Locals have even suggested raising the bar further, with one cheeky idea being that the losing mayor should mow the opposition’s home ground while wearing the rival team’s colours.
The challenge now sits with Mayor Penfold — will he accept?
