Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has unveiled a bold new plan to cut permanent migration by 25 percent and cap international student numbers, claiming the move will free up nearly 40,000 homes in the first year alone.
The announcement comes amid rising public concern over Australia’s housing shortage, with rental prices soaring and home ownership slipping further out of reach for many.
“This is about putting Australians first,” Dutton said. “Our migration program must be sustainable and match our capacity to provide housing, infrastructure, and essential services.”
The proposed cuts will target:
- A 25% reduction in the permanent migration intake
- Stricter caps on international student visas
Dutton’s plan is expected to spark fierce debate, particularly from the Labor government, which has overseen record-high migration levels in recent years—levels many argue have worsened the housing crisis.
