A routine police stop has ended in tragedy after a car slammed into a telegraph pole and burst into flames in the Hunter region this morning.
Around 10.45am, officers attempted to pull over a vehicle on Buchanan Road. The car reportedly stopped briefly before suddenly speeding off. Moments later, it smashed into a pole and erupted in fire.
The driver – a woman believed to be in her 30s – died at the scene. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Police locked down the crash site, declaring a critical incident. Detectives from Newcastle City Police District will now piece together exactly what happened, with the case set for independent review by the Professional Standards Command and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Do you want me to push it harder tabloid-style (more sensational, shock-heavy language), or keep it in this midway “breaking news meets tabloid” tone?
