Kurri Kurri residents were left choking and alarmed this afternoon after a foul-smelling stench swept through the area — with reports of children struggling to breathe.
The source? Early indications point to the Kurri Gas Plant, where Snowy Hydro has reportedly begun testing its powerful turbines for the first time.
Federal MP Dan Repacholi has confirmed his office has been flooded with complaints from worried locals as the strong odour blanketed the Hunter suburb. Repacholi says he’s urgently contacted the Hunter Power Project team at Snowy Hydro to find out what exactly was released into the air.
“We’re hearing this is connected to the turbine testing. I’ve reached out directly for answers,” Repacholi said in a public statement.
The stench has reportedly caused breathing problems — particularly among young children — prompting renewed concerns over the gas plant’s impact on nearby communities.
Repacholi is urging anyone in the Hunter electorate experiencing similar symptoms or concerns to get in touch with his office immediately.
Stay tuned — this story is developing. As soon as more details are available, we’ll bring them to you. Was this a one-off test — or the beginning of something more dangerous?
