Two teenagers have been charged following a fatal police pursuit in the Hunter over the weekend, as investigations continue.
Police attempted to stop a Honda on the New England Highway at Aberdeen around 11:55pm on Saturday (6 September), but the driver allegedly failed to comply, prompting a high-speed pursuit north to Scone. The vehicle crashed about 100m north of Makybe Diva Street.
A 17-year-old front-seat passenger died at the scene. The 14-year-old driver and three back-seat passengers – two teenage boys (14 and 17) and a 25-year-old woman – were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Initial inquiries suggest the car was stolen from a business in Wallsend earlier that evening.
The 14-year-old driver has been charged with multiple offences including dangerous driving causing death and police pursuit, and was refused bail. The 17-year-old passenger was charged with being carried in a stolen vehicle and granted conditional bail.
The 14-year-old back-seat passenger will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act, while the 25-year-old adult remains in hospital and has not been charged as yet.
A critical incident team continues to investigate the crash, which is also undergoing an independent review.
