BREAKING UPDATE: Fire damage may disrupt return to classes at Lake Macquarie school

Firefighters have worked through the night to contain a major blaze at a Lake Macquarie school, with concerns now turning to how the damage will impact students returning this week.

The fire broke out at Glendale Technology High School on Oakland Street just after 1am Monday, with crews arriving to find a two-storey building engulfed in flames. Around 20 Fire and Rescue NSW trucks and more than 100 firefighters responded, working for hours to bring the fire under control.

As investigations continue, the school has now issued an update to parents and carers, warning that normal operations may be disrupted when classes are due to resume after the holidays.

In a message sent to families, Principal Mr Anthony Angel said the full extent of the impact is not yet known, as emergency services remain in control of the site.

“No one will be allowed back onto school grounds until it is safe to do so,” he said.

Parents have been told further updates about arrangements for Wednesday, 22 April will be provided once more information becomes available.

The school also thanked emergency crews for their swift response in preventing further damage.

Authorities are continuing to assess the scene, with the cause of the fire yet to be determined.
