April 18 6:30 AM • MHV NEWS

A man has been charged after an alleged violent rampage left multiple people shaken in the Hunter region.

Police say about 10.30am on Friday (17 April 2026), officers were called to Station Street in Weston, near Cessnock, following reports of a disturbing assault.

On arrival, officers from Hunter Valley Police District were told a 34-year-old man allegedly punched nine people in the head before threatening them with a needle and fleeing the scene.

The situation escalated moments later when the man allegedly ran into a nearby service station on Cessnock Road, stealing several items before again taking off.

A police search of the area led officers to a church on Station Street, where the man was located. When approached, he allegedly fled once more before stopping nearby.

Police allege the man then attempted to assault officers, sparking a tense arrest in which OC spray and a Taser were deployed.

Paramedics from NSW Ambulance assessed the man at the scene before he was taken to Cessnock Police Station.

He has since been charged with multiple offences, including seven counts of common assault, assaulting a police officer, affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intimidation, being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, and shoplifting.

The man was refused bail and is due to face court on Saturday (18 April 2026).
