Hunter Region Divided on Peter Dutton’s Nuclear Plans
A recent poll conducted by MHV News has revealed significant division among Hunter residents regarding Peter Dutton’s proposal to establish a nuclear power plant in the region. The proposed site, the old Liddell power station owned by AGL, has been a focal point of debate.
Peter Dutton has identified the Hunter as a suitable location for a nuclear reactor at the old Liddell site. However, this proposal conflicts with Labor and AGL’s announced plans to develop a large-scale battery and solar panel manufacturing plant at the same location.
Dan Repacholli MP, criticized Dutton’s approach: “He stood in the centre of Sydney and announced the people of the Hunter would cop a nuclear power station. He didn’t have the balls to come to the Hunter to face the electors. This half-baked plan puts the thousands of local manufacturing jobs planned for the Liddell site at risk. People have a choice: high-paid local manufacturing jobs or Dutton’s nuclear fantasy. I know what my community wants, and it’s not a fantasy.”
The MHV News poll showed 702 votes in favor of nuclear power in the Hunter, while 647 residents supported Labor’s battery and solar manufacturing plan. This close result underscores the region’s division on the issue.
Despite differing opinions on the future of energy production, there is a consensus among Hunter residents that current power prices are unsustainable. Both sides agree that urgent action is needed to curb rapidly increasing energy costs.
