Tragedy struck overnight in Lake Macquarie as a collision resulted in a passenger’s death.

Emergency responders rushed to Freemans Drive, Cooranbong, around 12:15 am today following reports of a serious crash.

According to initial reports, a northbound Subaru Impreza lost control, colliding with the rear of a Hyundai Santa Fe—identified as a fully marked mobile speed camera vehicle—parked on the roadside.

Despite swift efforts by NSW Ambulance paramedics, the passenger, an 18-year-old male, succumbed to injuries at the scene.

The 18-year-old driver was extricated from the wreckage by emergency crews and transported to John Hunter Hospital for treatment. He is undergoing mandatory testing as part of the investigation.

Fortunately, the 43-year-old occupant of the Hyundai sustained minor injuries and declined medical assistance.

Authorities from Lake Macquarie Police District have cordoned off the area for forensic examination by specialists from the Crash Investigation Unit.

An extensive inquiry into the incident is underway, with a comprehensive report to be submitted to the Coroner.

Anyone with pertinent information is urged to reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision progress.
