Gun violence in the Hunter continues to escalate, with police launching an urgent investigation after a shotgun was fired during a home invasion in Mayfield.
At around 3:50am on Friday, 30 May 2025, officers were called to a residence on Bull Street following reports of a gunshot. Newcastle City Police quickly responded and established a crime scene.
Forensic investigators later confirmed the front door had been damaged by a shotgun blast. A further search uncovered a knife, knuckledusters, and an unspent bullet, all of which have been seized for forensic analysis.
Police believe the firearm was discharged during a targeted home invasion. Detectives from the Newcastle City Police District have formed Strike Force Barkov to investigate the incident.
