Stolen Church Bell Recovered by Hunter Antique Collector, But Search for Missing Donger Continues
A historic church bell stolen from St Anne’s Anglican Church in Paterson has been recovered after a local antique collector spotted it at a Hunter Valley scrapyard.
The 150-year-old bell, taken earlier this month, was identified by the collector who immediately contacted authorities. Police have since confirmed the bell’s safe return, but the search continues for the “donger”—the iron rod used to ring it.
Reverend Steve Shorrock told ABC News the community is thankful to have the bell back, but added, “it won’t be ringing again until we find the missing piece.”
The theft of the bell had sparked public outrage and led to widespread appeals across the region. NSW Police say investigations are ongoing and no charges have been laid.
Anyone with information about the missing donger is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
